Why Tony Soprano?

The Anti-Hero has always been intriguing to me. The tortured soul who does bad things, makes questionable decisions and generally lives by his own rules… but somewhere underneath it all, there’s still a moral compass fighting for control.

Tony Soprano is probably the ultimate example.

A ruthless mob boss. A family man. A businessman. A father. A son. A man battling his own demons while trying to keep everything around him from falling apart.

He’s not a hero.

Far from it.

But that’s exactly what makes him so interesting.

There’s something about characters like Tony that grabs me. Maybe it’s because I’ve always had a soft spot for the so-called “bad guys” — the outsiders, the underdogs, the characters who don’t necessarily play by the rules.

Tony just happens to be one of the greatest ever written.

So I wanted to paint him in a way that felt bigger than simply recreating a scene from The Sopranos. I wanted the portrait to capture that attitude, that presence and that unmistakable look of a man who walks into a room and already owns it.

Basically… Tony being Tony. 🤌

And obviously, no Tony Soprano piece would be complete without a little bit of Jossiepops chaos thrown into the mix.

You’re watching a guy who does some absolutely horrific things, then five minutes later you’re somehow feeling sorry for him, laughing at him or rooting for him.

That contradiction is what makes him such an incredible character.

For me, this painting is less about the gangster and more about the man underneath it all — the ego, the anger, the vulnerability, the family, the madness… all of it.

Tony Soprano is complicated.

And that makes him bloody good to paint.”
